Biography

Mary Katherine Alemany is a native of Huntsville, Alabama, and a dedicated advocate for individuals and families facing some of life’s most challenging legal matters. She earned her Bachelor of Arts in Sociology from Auburn University, where she was an active participant in the Auburn Pre-Law Scholars Program. Mary Katherine went on to earn her Juris Doctor from Cumberland School of Law at Samford University.

While at Cumberland, Mary Katherine demonstrated strong leadership and service, serving as Class Treasurer, a member of the Student Bar Association, the law school representative to the Samford University Graduate Student Council, an instructor in the Street Law Program, and a member of the Harvey S. Jackson Excellence in Teaching Award Committee.

After passing the Alabama Bar Exam in July 2017, Mary Katherine began her legal career practicing in Randolph County, Alabama. She joined Akridge & Balch in June 2023, where her practice focuses on criminal defense, family law—including divorce, custody, adoptions, termination of parental rights, and child support—and juvenile delinquency and dependency matters. Mary Katherine has zealously represented hundreds of criminal clients, handling cases ranging from traffic offenses to serious felony charges— including drug charges, sex offenses, and murder.

Mary Katherine is deeply committed to taking a personal, client-focused approach in every case she handles. Her goal is to ensure that each client feels heard, understood, and fully informed at every stage of their case. She prides herself on clear communication, accessibility, and steadfast advocacy both in and out of the courtroom.

In recognition of her work, Mary Katherine was named to the Legal Elite Attorneys of Alabama for 2025 and 2026 in the area of criminal defense, an honor awarded statewide. She was also selected as a 2025 and 2026 Rising Star Super Lawyer for criminal defense practice.

Mary Katherine is a certified Guardian ad Litem and a member of the Alabama Criminal Defense Lawyers Association, National Criminal Defense Lawyers Association, Lee County Bar Association, Randolph County Bar Association, Chambers County Bar Association and the Alabama State Bar. She serves clients throughout Lee County, Randolph County, Chambers County and surrounding areas.

Outside of her legal practice, Mary Katherine lives in Opelika, Alabama with her husband, Matt, their two sons, Wally and John Henry, and their two dogs, Waylon and Ophelia. In her free time, she enjoys live music, reading, and keeping up with her energetic boys. Mary Katherine is extremely passionate about her volunteer work with Redeeming Grace Ministries, a transitional home for women rebuilding their lives after leaving a correctional facility or rehabilitation program. She and her family are active members of Church of the Highlands.
