Helping You Reach Your Goals

When should you update your estate plan?

A good estate plan brings peace of mind, but you should not keep it the same forever. Life changes fast. Alabama families often reach a point where they need to review their documents again. Regular updates help your wishes stay in line with your current life, your family’s needs and your long-term goals.

Big life changes that mean you need an update

Some events make it essential to update your plan. Marriage, divorce or the birth of a child can change who you want to receive your property or manage your personal matters. A move to or from Alabama is a strong reason to review your plan.

A will made in another state usually stays valid in Alabama, but powers of attorney and health-care directives follow Alabama’s rules once you live here. You should check your plan to confirm that every document works under the laws of your new state.

Major illness or the purchase of a home, land or other valuable property also calls for a review. These life changes can shift who manages your affairs, who receives your assets or how you want doctors to handle your care.

Why regular reviews matter in Alabama

Estate plans can become outdated even without major events. Beneficiary names on your accounts may no longer match your will. An executor may move away, pass on or no longer be able to fulfill the role.

Alabama allows out-of-state executors, but they often face more challenges. Alabama also blocks out-of-state administrators — when no will exists — unless they already serve in another state.

Laws in Alabama also change, so older plans may no longer follow current rules. Many attorneys suggest you review your plan every three to five years. This habit keeps your documents clear, current and easier for your family to follow when they need them most.
